Tray Makeover

I spotted this lovely wooden tray a few weeks ago at Goodwill.  I don’t stop in there regularly.  Maybe it’s just me, but I think their prices are often a little steep.  I have found a few things worth bringing home though, and even managed to get this with their half-off color tag of the week.  So I paid $1.50 for it.  It needs some love. (meaning spray paint)  And a destination. (meaning I don’t know what I’m going to do with it yet)  I’m actually thinking it might make a cute centerpiece for our dining table, with a little vase of flowers or something in it.  But we won’t know for sure until our table gets to go back in that space.

At any rate, here’s what I did to turn it into a beauty.  I lightly sanded the whole thing with 220 grit sandpaper and wiped it down with a cloth.

After one coat of spray paint, I could see some gaps and cracks in the edges so I use some wood filler.  When that dried I sanded down the patches and painted again–Heirloom White.
The hardest part was picking the paper to go on the bottom.  I finally decided on this one, cut the paper to fit, and went to town with the mod podge.

Now I just think it needs a cute little vase with a flower in it.  What do you think?  Does the re-do work?
