Purse Station

Hey everyone, as we head into the weekend, I’m going to share with you my project for the first week of American Crafter.  Our challenge was “Hardware Store Gems.”  I loved that I was able to fix a problem area where I always had bags piled up on the floor.

Here’s what I picked up from Lowes.  I wanted to use a few predictable items, as well as a surprise one.

And here’s what I came up with.
A chevron striped wall and purse station–And yes, those stripes are actually the electrical tape!

Here’s what I did:
1–Tape off the wall–top, bottom, inside corner and outside corner.
2–Paint in original color to seal the tape lines (white for ceiling and baseboard and Parisian Taupe for walls)
3–Paint with sample of Valspar Turquoise Tint
4–Let it dry for a day
5–Mark points for laying the tape.  My wall was 24 inches wide, so I measured 6 inch spaces across the bottom.  I also measured 6 inch spaces up the right hand side of the wall.  Then using my level, I made small intersecting lines at each cross point.  That would tell me where each piece of tape would stop or start.  Here’s a crazy-cool drawing I made in Gimp to try to give you a visual of what I’m talking about.

6–Start laying down electrical tape.  It’s a little bit stretchy (so pull it carefully) but it’s also pretty forgiving–I could pick up the end and restick it a few times to make sure it was in the right spot.
7–Keep going up the wall laying down tape and cutting to make points.
8–I cut a stencil out of freezer paper and ironed it down on a piece of canvas drop cloth I’d measured to fit my frame (that I spray painted yellow and sanded off a little too)  I painted black acrylic paint over the stencil and when it was dry I rubbed some sand paper over the paint just a little to make it a little bit rustic.
9–Hang art and determine hook placement.  I used some of my bags as a guide for where I wanted to hang the hooks and made pencil marks for each set of holes.  None of my hooks lined up with studs, so I used a drywall anchor for one of the two screws for each hook.  I should be able to hang 50 pounds on each one now without any problems (though heaven help me if I’m carrying around a purse that weighs that much!)

**Thanks for the votes–I made it to Round 2!**
