Better Mom Day 2: Listening

If you’re new to the 31 day series, over 1200 bloggers have chosen a theme they want to write about every day in October ranging from food or fashion to faith or fabric.  See the whole list atThe Nester.  I decided to focus on trying to be a better mom, and you can see my first post here.

Day 2: Today’s focus was listening to my kids.  They are 8, 6 and 3…and they are seldom quiet.  All too often I find that I’ve tuned them out or just keep saying “uh-huh” (because I’m working on something else, because I’m tired, because earlier they were just complaining, or whatever) Today I really tried to stop what I was doing, look at them when they were talking, and not turning away before they were done.

Here are some gems I picked up today, because I took time to listen.

From my 3 year old: “Thumbs up is for water, milk and bread.  Thumbs down is for punching and hitting people.”

From my 6 year old: “Sometimes I wonder if I’m just dreaming and I haven’t even been born yet, but then I can feel things, so I’m really here.”

From my 8 year old: “Because of reading Katie Kazoo books, I think–what if I changed places with someone I don’t even know.  Like my brain went into their body!”

It was definitely a good exercise for me…and one I will keep working on.

In other news, you can see this post at Whatever Dee Dee Wants where I wrote about decorating pillowcases with my girls.
