I Don't Want to Lose You! Google Reader Alternatives

Who currently uses Google Reader to keep track of all your favorite blogs?  I've been using it!  But now have you seen this message pop up?
But don't panic!  You don't have to lose all the blogs feeds you've collected, and you won't have to wonder if I ever found a way to store my washi tape, or if we ever remodel the last two rooms in the house (the kids' rooms) or even how our pet goats are doing.

Here are a couple of articles about it here and here.

Mandy at Small Fine Print wrote up an excellent tutorial on how to extract all your Google Reader info and add it to a new reader service.   She give examples of Feedly.com and NetVibes.com.

Then another good post at Tech4Mommies.

Honestly, I'm kind of excited about one thing though...I have two or three blogs in my reader that have been abandoned, subsequently hijacked and are purely spam.  Because of some glitch in the Google Reader/Google Friend Connect interface I have been unsuccessful in deleting them from my reader.  I'm sure that in one of these new readers I'll have no problem deleting them.  Yay!

So back to the original point here, I don't want to lose you!  I hope you'll transfer my feed over to a new reader, and you can find me in all these other places too:

Facebook (though we tend to only see updates that Facebook decides are important now unless page owners pay Facebook to "promote" our posts....BUT, you can go here and make sure that show in news feed is checked, and you can also check get notifications.  I did read that the "rumor" of adding pages to an interest list doesn't actually affect what you see in your feed)

Get posts delivered to your inbox by entering your email in the "subscribe" box in my sidebar.

There you have it.  Hope all that info helps.  What do you think?

Have you seen other posts I should include here?  Leave me a comment and I'll add them!

  1. Thanks Steph. I had heard rumors of Reader shutting down. I also installed Linky Followers on all of my blogs long ago in anticipation of this change by Google. It is very easy to set up. Blessings ♥

  2. I feel like Rip Van Winkle...please tell me this is 'fresh news' and not something that has been going on for a week or so...think brain fog here.
What I would like to know, how will the elimination of Google Reader affect GFC and my reading lists? Will they still be available once signed in to Blogger?
I have so much going on at the moment, I can't seem to 'digest' the changes with Google Reader.

  3. i signed up with blog lovin', and i hated it instantly. I signed up with feedly, and I think i am in love! i might even like it better than reader! no joke.

also, i didn't know you had goats...i'm a little jealous!

  4. I really love Feedly-I've been using it for a while because I didn't like Google Reader. It just keeps getting better.

  5. I switched to Feedly this morning and am slowly learning the ins/outs.

  6. Thanks Steph, for the news (I know I'm reading this long after you wrote it) and for the suggestions and links to other sites offering tutorials. I am a new follower and I will add you feed to whatever new reader I decide to use.
