Herringbone Wall Art plus $200 to Jo-Ann or Home Depot!

I know you guys will all be excited about today's post!   I have a fun 4th of July project for you--be sure to stick around to the end so you can enter the giveaway for $200 to  your choice of JoAnn or Home Depot sponsored by coupons.com.  Think of what you could do with that!

Let me show you what I did with a few items from JoAnn--using my JoAnn coupon of course.

24x24 stretched canvas
White foam core board
Gold dot burlap (or other fabric of your choice)
Red, Blue and White paint (I used Apple Barrel colors Cardinal Crimson and Turquoise)
Masking tape (stick better to the canvas than blue painters tape in my experience)
Red paper/patterned cardstock

1--Tape herringbone pattern on the canvas.

2--Paint all edges with white paint.  This lets the white paint seep under any the tape anywhere that it might, leaving a nice crisp line when you use the colored paint.  (Also, I'm all about being honest, so it's not totally fool proof...I still had a couple of tiny spots that I went back and touched up with white paint.  But nothing in this photo was touched up, doing the white layer of paint first really does make a huge difference!)

3--Alternate red and blue in each section of the pattern.  Remove tape.

4--Cut a 12 inch square from the foam board using an exacto knife or box cutter.  Please be careful of course!  Cut fabric with 2 or 3 extra inches on each side.  Wrap square with fabric and secure tightly around the back with hot glue.  Be careful here too :)

5--Cut a star about 7.5 to 8.5 inches across out of the red paper.

6--Layer star on fabric on canvas, attaching with hot glue.  Add a picture hanger to the back canvas frame, or just set the art on a mantel.

How do you think it turned out?

Now, for the exciting part for you guys.  Pops and Podge has put together this great team of bloggers to work on this giveaway, and they each have a cool 4th of July project to show you too.  I hope you'll check them all out, and good luck!

  2. I love the colors you used! Such a great project!!! And I love the tip about painting white first over the tape to help with bleeding. I just recently learned that and it's been a huge help!

I also entered your contest! I would love to win and I would probably opt for the Home Depot card because I am going to be working on a craft series in October and I will need a huge ton of supplies from the hardware store.

I'd love it if you would submit your project to our link up party this week! I would love to see it there!

  3. I'd DIY a really great photo collage wall in my dining room. Frames are expensive!

  4. I love herringbone! What a versatile project that can be customized with other colors! I am pinning this now! Glad to be doing the giveaway with you!

  5. I love how you used the tape for your project! What fun colors! Herringbone is so fun to work with and I would love to do this project!

  6. Cute, Steph! I would buy fabric to make new curtains!

  7. I would love to make a crib skirt for my son's nursery.

  8. I would refinish some outdoor furniture.

  10. I'd love to re-do my bedroom! Looking to add a make-up table, maybe a new bedspread and some paint to add some color. Tired of plain white walls!

  11. A painted canvas for my daughters room!

  12. I've gotta get ready for this baby coming in September! I think we'd buy stuff from Home Depot to make a fun loft bed for the big boy so we can make room for the crib in their soon to be shared room :)

  13. I would buy tons of fabric for making my family clothes.

  14. I have a few projects in the works that need some help from Home Depot and Joann's: I'm refinishing my kitchen table, I have a couple more walls in our new home that need some sort of photo collage, and I need to make a few sets of curtains for the master bedroom and DD's room.

  15. I see all these cute photo backgrounds and I would love to make one.

  16. We are in the middle of a million house projects, so I would love to win and put some money towards our new tile shower.
