Yellow Entertainment Center

{Painted entertainment center for craft storage}

Do any of you remember me posting this entertainment center on Instagram several months ago?  I found it on Craigslist for just $30 so I could try to contain some of my craft messes supplies.

This is how it started out, but now it looks awesome in my room. Here’s how I got it all painted and finished up.

I bought 1 gallon of June Day Behr paint (1 quart wouldn’t have been enough because it took 3 coats to cover the dark finish)  I turned it into chalk paint by adding a tablespoon of unsanded grout mixed with a bit of water for every cup of paint I used.

Like I said, it took 3 coats of paint to cover it well, and I painted the inside as well.  I removed the doors and the shelves so I could paint them inside and laying flat.

When all coats were dry I did some distressing around the corners and edges.

I did a light sanding with a sanding block and wiped everything with a tack cloth to remove dust. For a top coat I went with a satin finish waterbased polycrylic.  I tried waxing a piece of furniture once and wasn’t pleased with it. I’m sure it works great for people who know what they’re doing, but I’m not one of those people 🙂  After 2 coats of polycrylic, I let it dry a couple of days and moved it into the bedroom to fill it up. I found that having the polycrylic was very important on the shelves and on the inside so that the paint didn’t get scratched off as I moved boxes and other things around.

To cover the holes in the back where TV cords would normally go we cut two pieces of beadboard to fit on either side of the wood slat in the back.  I painted them Aqua Spray (Behr) blue and attached them with liquid nails on the back.  I weighted them down with paint cans and cement blocks overnight.

And you guys get a bonus double-post because I’m guest posting for Abbey at The Cards We Drew today–so click over to see how I have it all organized inside.

I want to know–do you have any yellow furniture in your house? If you’ve blogged about it, leave me a link!
