Top Posts of 2015

2015 has come to an end, and it's been another fun year of blogging. You have stuck with me while we moved into this new house and did a bunch of remodeling. You helped me pick paint colors, prep for my sister's wedding, summer vacations, and watched me start my real college classes for going back to school. We're going to take a look at the popular posts of the year--see if any of your favorites made the list! Click each photo caption to go to the original post for more details, instructions, etc. Thanks for hanging out on Crafting in the Rain this year!

Mini Disco Ball Party Hats

{New Year's Eve Party Hats}

I had some mini disco ball ornaments left over from Christmas. I used them to decorate some of the gifts. Instead of packing them away for next year, I knew I wanted to use them for some New Year celebrations and decided that hats would be perfect!

I got this adorable shadow box scene from Jessica at Everyday Party. You can get all her instructions on how to make the shadow box. There's cute little glitter reindeer in there, pulling a sleigh--and there's even a blanket draped over the side! Cute right?

It's perfect sitting up on my mantel with my other Christmas decorations. Thanks Jessica, and Merry Christmas! If you want loads of adorable party ideas, check out Jessica's site along with her Instagram.

Stocking Place Cards with Wood and Vinyl

Guys--I am almost completely done with school for this semester! I'm pretty excited, and I'm still trying to get a couple of Christmas ideas finished up. Like these stocking place markers for our Christmas table. I was sent some Expressions Vinyl to get my creative juices flowing, and I decided to use the beautiful red holographic vinyl and white flocked vinyl.

Over at the Expressions Vinyl Facebook Page they are having a rock your stockings contest! People can upload a picture of a stocking they fancied up using vinyl! And they asked some of their favorite bloggers to get the ball rolling with some fun ideas! (You can enter to win a gift card--but I also have a gift card for $100 to Expressions Vinyl at the bottom of this post! )

How to Build a Box Shelf

This post is brought to you by Rockwell. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This project has been on my to-do list for a while. Probably since we moved into this house, so about a year. I finally got around to doing it, and wouldn't you know, I wish I'd done it months ago. It was so easy!

Our master bathroom is quite big, but the actual potty room is quite small. It's nice having it closed off, but there's literally only room for the toilet in there. My "extra TP storage" has just been a small basket on the floor with a couple extra rolls in there, but I knew I ultimately wanted that up off the floor.

So I built a box shelf to install up on the wall. And you can too.

1x6  cut to (2) 12.5 inches and (2) 11 inches
1x4  cut to 11 inches
wood stain (I used Minwax dark walnut)
1 1/4 inch pocket hole screws

(affiliate links)
Kreg Jig
Rockwell 20V MaxLithium drill and driver

Start by drilling 2 pocket holes into each end of the 11 inch pieces of wood. (4 holes total on each piece)

Then drill screws into the pocket holes and into the longer pieces of wood (pocket holes will face the outside of the box).

There are a couple of options on how to hang the shelf. I used a French cleat, so we cut the 1x4 down the middle at a 45 degree angle. One piece gets attached inside the top of the box.

The other gets screwed to the wall, then the top piece slides over it and holds it in place. I talk more about French cleats here in this post about the framed pegboard organizer. You can also just drill the 1x4 to your wall (use two screws, and at least one must go into a stud or a drywall anchor.) Rest the top inside of the box shelf on it and attach the shelf to the 1x4 with a screw from the top.

I kind of love having my very own drill, and with the two rechargeable batteries, I'll never have to wait around on a dead one. It just might be the perfect thing to pick up for someone for Christmas, or to add to your own wish list!

Rockwell is also hosting a Sweepstakes to win 2 sets of Rockwell tools--talk about easy gift giving! Enter here--> http://www.rocksomeonesholiday.pgtb.me/SfrNGJ

Plaid Christmas Mantel

Did you know this year is the first year I have a fireplace mantel to decorate? None of our houses have had one before! So I was pretty excited to play around with some Christmas decorations on the mantel and I love the buffalo plaid piece I made.

The mantel isn't very deep, so I can't do very much layering. But a few big pieces need to fill up the space because the ceilings are high.

I had this large canvas print print already, and wanted to cover it as the main part of my mantel decoration. Enter-- a roll of plaid wrapping paper from Target!

Gold Noel

{Noel wood cutout}

Last month I shared this Christmas decor on Crafting Chicks, but I wanted to make sure you didn't miss it! It's pretty, shiny, and if you cut out your own design, it's totally custom.

Recently, with my husband's help, I made a gold painted "Mr & Mrs" for the head table at my brother's wedding dinner. I loved the look so much I wanted something for Christmas that we could have in our house.

Instructions for the XOXO marquee
You could do this same idea with any cut out letters or word. We got to cut out our own (read more about our X-carve machine) so I got to design it with the font and the size I wanted. It's cut from 3/4 inch MDF and is about 6 inches tall and 13 inches wide.

I had to sand the cut edges smooth, and if you cut something similar with a scroll saw or jigsaw you may have to do the same. Something purchased will probably ready for paint.

I used Modern Masters metallic gold paint and put two coats on everything. Don't forget the inside cut outs.

When the paint is all dry, it's ready to display.

I put it on my mantel. Since we moved back in February, and our new house has a fireplace with a mantel! I added a few other Christmas decorations (I think my husband was a little surprised to see these things out already.) But I also think I'll have fun moving pieces around in the next week or so to get everything just right.

If you like the trees in the picture, click for the glitter cone tree tutorial here.

I hope I've given you some ideas to spark some Christmas decorating. Where in your house would you put one of these? Want one just like it? Let me know and I can make one for you too!

Gold Stencil Wall

This post brought to you in partnership with Modern Masters. Thoughts and opinions are my own.

You know those projects that you start out, and you think you know exactly what you want, but then as you get farther along, you're not loving it? That totally happened with me on this one wall behind my craft table in the bedroom. I knew I wanted a custom stencil, so I cut one with my Cricut and stencil material.

Holiday Funfetti® Mini Cookie Cups

This week has kind of been a crazy week around here. Extra activities for the kids, a day off in the middle of the week for Veteran's Day (thank you veterans!), regular school and homework and music for the kids, and of course school for me. I've had a big graphic design project I'm working on this week plus I took a computer programming exam too.

It was definitely nice to take a little break in the kitchen and do some recipe creation with FunfettiCake Mix and M&M's® . Baking for the holidays is so relaxing, and comes with so many fun memories too. Today's recipe is a fun and easy one to add to your list of Christmas cookies.

Scents of the Holidays

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #HolidayWithGlade #CollectiveBias

Have you ever been back to visit a place where you’ve previously lived? I was recently in California for my brother’s wedding and decided to make a quick detour on my way back to the airport at the end of my trip. I stopped by the apartment that my husband and I lived in when we first got married. It was a tiny little place. If you opened the dishwasher, you trapped yourself into the kitchen. And there was a little drawer that couldn’t even open because the fridge stuck out too far and got in the way. But it was a perfect place for us to start out.

We had a little Christmas tree there; it was even shorter than me, but it was a real tree, and it was ours. Mostly we’ve gone the artificial, pre-lit route since then, but I still love the smell of a real Christmas tree. Every Christmas growing up we had a real Christmas tree that we decorated on Christmas Eve. Even still, my mom lights a favorite pine candle every season.

The new Glade® BE AT PEACE™ scent, which has notes of balsam fir and juniper, reminds me of all that together. Aren’t memories wonderful? I love how that smell takes me back to my own excitement of Christmas as a kid, and even that first Christmas as a married couple.

Now I get to create memories like that with my kids. This will actually be our first Christmas here in our current house; we moved in back in February. So while I’ll be rearranging some decorations, (we have a fireplace with a real mantel in this house!) and searching for the best place to set up our Christmas tree, we’ll still make gingerbread houses, decorate sugar cookies, drink hot chocolate and sing Christmas carols. The different cozy scents of our home will someday transport my kids back to this time, and I hope it makes them smile and feel loved too.

Any one of these crafts or treats could be a fun addition to your holiday festivities:

            Glitter Foam Trees

Which Glade® scent will set the scene for your holiday celebrations this year? In addition to BE AT PEACE™, look out for the rest of the Glade® Limited Edition Winter Collection. I was able to find some of the Glade® Limited Edition Winter Collection scents at my local Kroger store and you will be able to find the perfect scents to bring out the feelings of the holiday season in your home too!

Inside Out Game and Snacks

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. #InsideOutMovieNight #CollectiveBias

{Inside Out party or movie night ideas}

We love having movie nights at home with our kids, and this weekend added a few friends and watched Inside Out. Have you seen it?

When it came out on DVD and BluRay this week I picked it up while I was at Target, and it was totally easy to grab with several snacks for our movie night too.

Plus, the DVD/Blu-Ray at Target has 20 minutes of bonus features.

Dipping the Peanut Butter pretzel bites into colored candy melts, I made bags of Mixed Emotions for everyone. Aren't they cute?

Each one of the colors matches one of the emotions in the movie: red for Anger, green for Disgust, blue for Sadness, purple for Fear and yellow for Joy. Download the printable tags, cut out, and staple them over the top of plastic bags.

I also made an Inside Out game where we try to guess the emotion/ character. Print out and cut up the sheet of phrases and make 5 colored gems (glass pieces with colored paper glued on the back side.) Download the phrases for the game.

To play, each person takes a phrase and picks out a colored gem from a bag so no one else can see what color it is (then put it bag in the bag). Then say the phrase using that emotion and everyone else guesses who they are. It can get pretty funny, especially if you've got little kids to play with.

We really liked Inside Out, and it gives us a fun way to talk about what we're feeling, how decisions shouldn't be made out of anger, and I like asking my kids what "Islands" they think they have. I like to hear what's important to them right now.

If you've seen Inside Out, I'd love to hear who's your favorite character? (I'm of course quite fond of all the mom-emotions.) And you now have a couple of extra good ideas to add to your Inside Out movie night with family or friends. Enjoy!
