How to Revive a Tired Couch

Our sectional couch in our family room is the most comfortable couch we’ve ever owned. We love it! Besides being the perfect place for our whole family to hang out and watch a movie, we’ve had guests sleep on it when we’ve had a full house. Part of what makes it so comfortable are the down-filled cushions.

And even though the feathers are all contained in an insert inside the cushions, some feathers still manage to work their way out and make a bit of a mess on the couch. Then the back cushions get smooshed out of shape pretty easily.

Once a week or so I have to give my couch a little refresh, and I’ve just discovered Scotch-Brite™ 50% Stickier Lint Rollers which makes the job a ton easier. In fact, I was inspired to clean under all the cushions too!

The first step just involves a bit of muscle power. Lay the back cushions down on the couch and pound several times with your fists to spread the feathers back out through the whole cushion. Set them to the side. Now check out all those feathers that have gotten stuck to the back of the couch!

Repeat with any seat cushions that seem to be getting misshapen. Then remove those also so you can clean under these cushions (I don’t have to do this part as often.) I always seem to find hair elastics, pencils a LEGO or 2, and a bit of loose change.

Pick up those things, and then use the Scotch-Brite roller to clean up the rest of the mess. It’s so much easier than dragging out the vacuum! They pick up feathers, dust, crumbs, and pet hair. Can you see everything mine picked up?

Replace the seat cushions back on the couch and give them the roller treatment too. In addition to grabbing feathers, I’m also picking up pet hair from our little Chihuahua. Again, so much easier and more effective than using the vacuum!

The last step is to replace the back-to-normal back cushions and clean them up with the roller as well.

You may have noticed in my before picture that the ottoman was also full of junk, magazines, remotes and books. I decided the best way to contain that was to pick up a pretty, flat box that we could use for storage right on the ottoman. It keeps magazines and remotes within reach, but not out of control.

To finish freshening up the space, I threw in a yellow blanket and a pillow. Our couch is now ready for all our movie marathons, or even for being a guest room.

I hope you’ll try this way of cleaning up your couch. What do you usually find in your couch cushions?
