How to Clean a Jetted Tub

Let me show you how to clean a jetted tub. When we bought this house, I wouldn’t say that the spa tub was a big selling feature. I’ve never really cared if we have one or not. But now that I’ve had a chance to use it, I love it! BUT you know I had to make sure it was well cleaned before I was going to sit in there.

If you have a jetted tub in your current house, or you’re like us and you’ve just bought a house with a tub that you don’t even know the last time it was cleaned right, this post is for you. (some affiliate links)

Here’s what you’ll need:
Oh Yuk Jetted Tub System Cleaner – check out the reviews too
SoftScrub
Sponge
Gloves
Cascade liquid dishwasher detergent

Start by filling the tub above the jets and turning them on. With gloves on, to make sure it doesn’t get on your skin, pour TWO ounces of Oh Yuk into the water and let it run for 15 minutes. Turn off the jets and drain the tub.

Use SoftScrub to clean the entire tub, especially any rings around the edge, and rinse the cleaner off using a cup or pitcher to pour the water around.  Fill tub with clean water and run jets to rinse about 10 minutes. Drain.

Fill tub and add 3 capfulls of liquid dishwasher soap and run jets for 15 minutes. Drain.

Fill tub and run jets with 2 more ounces of Oh Yuk. Run for 15 minutes then drain.

Do a final rinse cycle with clean water and run the jets for 10-15 minutes. If the water stays clear, you’re good to go. If there are any floaties in there still, do another round of Oh Yuk.

I will warn you right now that this process will take at least a couple of hours, mostly because you need to refill and run the tub a few times. You will also probably use up all your hot water. So keep that in mind when planning out your cleaning!
Also, don’t add more than 2 ounces of Oh Yuk at one time, thinking you’ll hurry up the process. It will bubble too much.

So to review:
Round 1–Oh Yuk, jets 15 minutes, drain.
RINSE with jets
Clean the actual tub and rinse without filling the tub
Round 2–Dishwasher detergent, jet 15 minutes, drain.
Round 3–Oh Yuk, jets 10 minutes, drain.
RINSE with jets.

To maintain, add a 1/2 cup of bleach to the water after you finish bathing each time, then use Oh Yuk again about every month (with frequent use) or if you notice the jets are spitting out dirt again.

Do you have a jetted tub you’ve been afraid to use? Now you don’t have to be! Clean it out and relax!

Good idea! Maybe even a giant bucket in the middle that gets filled up with water once but then doesn't drain each time!

P.S. The eco-geek in me is reeling from the idea of all that wasted water. Think I'll try to find something for 'displacement'. Maybe a tallish plastic tub weighted down with a few bricks. Gotta think on that...

I've got a jetted tub that I'd like to thoroughly clean before putting the house on the market this fall, so this is very useful information. I'm not a big fan of chemicals, but this is one instance where you need something special to get inside all those little nooks and crannies. Thanks for sharing!
